Amputation is the removal of a body extremity by trauma or surgery. As a surgical measure, it is used to control pain or a disease process in the affected limb, such as malignancy or gangrene. In some cases, it is carried out on individuals as a preventative surgery for such problems.

Amputation of the lower extremity is often the treatment of choice for an unreconstructable or a functionally unsatisfactory limb. If a cancerous tumor is present in a limb, an amputation is often recommended. More than a third of cancer related amputations involve the lower limbs. Depending on the particular circumstance, the individual may receive chemotherapy, radiation, and other treatments along with the amputation to increase their chances of a cure.
