Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. It provides a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected lesions. Usually done as an out-patient procedure, it is useful for patients who complain of diarrhea, constipation, blood in the stools, colitis and lower abdominal pain. It is also useful to evaluate patients who have weight loss. Diseases diagnosed with Colonoscopy include Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's disease, Tuberculosis, Polyps, Cancer of the colon, Amebiasis, Infective Colitis, Diverticulosis, etc.

Procedure

During a colonoscopy, a physician uses a colonoscope (a long, flexible instrument about 1/2 inch in diameter) to view the lining of the colon. You will lie on your left side with your knees drawn up toward your chest. After you have received a sedative and pain reliever, the colonoscope is inserted through the anus. It is gently moved into the beginning of the large bowel and sometimes into the lowest part of the small intestine. Air will be inserted through the scope to provide a better view. Suction may be used to remove fluid or stool. Therapeutic procedures like Polypectomy, stricture dilatation and Stenting for in-operable cancer of the colon can be done through Colonoscopy. It is recommended for everyone above the age of 40 years to undergo a screening Colonoscopy to detect and remove polyps.
